Artist: Hooking Our Heritage
Description: This rug was created to be used in a week long demonstration of rug hooking at the Five Island Art Gallery in Tors Cove August 2009. To date, over 250 people have tried their hand at rug hooking, and most reported enjoying the process. Photos were taken of all the people involved and each one was invited to write their comments in a daily log. Here are some of the things they said:
I was born and raised on Fogo Island. My grandmother and my mother taught me to hook rugs when I was a little girl. It was great fun for all of us. Thanks for the opportunity to try it again. Matilda Cluett
Thanks for teaching a new craft to us! Lori & Lien, Coquitlan, BC
What a way to preserve our heritage – rug hooking. I would love to learn the art. My darling mother decorated all floors in her home with her beautiful rugs. Sheila Lee, Riverhead, SMB
Adventures at every turn – that is what rug hooking has given me. What a surprise to come to this lovely gallery and experience the therapy of hook in hand in such a heartfelt expression of enduring love for community.
Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of your grand gesture. Cynthia Young, Orillia Sunshine Rug Hookers, Ontario
From Downpatrick to Paradise, what a treat to learn a new craft. Yvonne Lewis
