Ilse Hughes loves the play of brush stroke and colour when it initially hits the surface because for her painting should be first and foremost about 'paint'. Her interpretation relies on those first clean strokes of line, suggested form and intuitive choice of colour.
“There is a heady feeling from the original enthusiasm, which is spontaneous and yet decisive. These strokes matter.”
Ilse enjoys the intimacy and the freedom of using her own colour interpretation without the constraints that the exterior landscape subconsciously demands.
